Special Education Needs and Inclusion (SENI)
At Oakwood IPS all talents and all abilities are nurtured.
Oakwood is an inclusive school where every child matters and each is supported to succeed to the best of their ability.
The class teacher, parents, the child and our Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Coordinator plan work together to overcome difficulties and to nurture special talents children may have. Learning support is offered when that is appropriated to child’s needs and, when necessary, advice and support from outside experts will be sought to ensure the best approach is taken.
We are one of the first primary schools in Northern Ireland to have developed a Gifted and Talented Policy and Programme. One of our learning support teachers was a member of the working group, drafted to work on the Gifted and Talented section of the SEN file for teachers which was distributed to schools across Northern Ireland.
Our Additional Educational Needs Provision includes the following programmes and strategies:
Gifted and Talented, Sensory, Literacy and Numeracy including Reading Partnership and Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Maths and Maths Recovery, Social Communication, Peer Group and Primary Movement.
